Africa 10XG Set to Deliver Ethical Leadership Youth Seminar at Pleasant Life College

3 min read

Two students in school uniforms sit together at a classroom desk, working on an assignment and discussing their work.

Preparing to engage students on key life and self-care themes, including integrity, accountability, responsible decision-making, and character development.

The programme will also cover health awareness, relationships, boundaries, purity, and responsible conduct.

The seminar will create space for young people to think more deeply about their choices, their relationships with others, and the kind of individuals they want to become.

Starting with what young people are experiencing

Ahead of the seminar, Africa 10XG Foundation conducted a baseline survey with 30 students at Pleasant Life College in Afolabi, Lagos, Nigeria.

The assessment explored experiences and attitudes connected to honesty, personal integrity, peer interactions, and academic conduct.

The responses provide an important picture of some of the choices students are already making.

Among those surveyed, 28 out of 30 students said they had previously lied to avoid trouble or gain an advantage. Twenty-seven reported having taken something that did not belong to them, even if it was small, while 20 students said they had cheated during a test or examination.

The findings around examination malpractice revealed another side of the conversation.

When students were asked whether paying for leaked examination questions or “cheat codes” was acceptable or "cool", 27 of the 30 students disagreed or strongly disagreed.

That contrast caught our attention.

It suggests that recognising an unethical practice and consistently resisting it are not always the same thing. Young people may understand the standard they want to uphold while still facing situations, pressures, or temptations that make those standards difficult to practise.

This is where meaningful engagement can make a difference.

Creating room for honest conversations

The forthcoming seminar has been structured to move beyond simply telling students what they should or should not do.

Through pre-recorded learning modules, facilitated conversations, interactive activities, and question-and-answer sessions, participants will examine ethical leadership through situations they can recognise and discuss.

The seminar will run in separate boys’ and girls’ streams, allowing some subjects to be explored in ways appropriate to each group.

Across the sessions, students will encounter themes including integrity, accountability, responsible decision-making, character development, health awareness, and healthy relationships.

The boys’ sessions will additionally address personal boundaries, purity, and responsible conduct. For the girls, the seminar will also cover menstrual health, hygiene, and self-care.

Participating girls will also receive hygiene kits, including sanitary pads.

From discussion to personal responsibility

Knowing the right thing to do does not automatically make the right decision easy.

For young people, choices can be influenced by friendships, fear of consequences, the desire to fit in, academic pressure, or the temptation to take an easier route.

The seminar will therefore encourage students to consider not only what an ethical choice is but also what it takes to make one when there is pressure to do otherwise.

The programme will conclude with a Pledge of Honour, giving students an opportunity to commit to honesty and integrity.

Africa 10XG Foundation will also provide participating students with free Christian educational literature as part of the outreach.

The intention is for students to leave with something more practical than a definition of ethical leadership: a clearer understanding of how their values can influence the decisions they make each day.

Building character and instilling values early

Africa needs young people prepared not only to achieve but also to do so with character.

That development starts early.

By creating opportunities for students to question, reflect, discuss, and take responsibility for their choices, Africa 10XG Foundation is strengthening the foundations on which future leadership will be built.

The upcoming engagement at Pleasant Life College is one part of that wider commitment.

Because before leadership becomes a position, it is a pattern of choices.
